You're right.. money is just paper, greed is the culprit. But, with bad
calls happening already, don't you think they would happen much more often
when players are playing for money?
If you look at professional football players, they don't carry big smiles on
their faces during matches like the Mohawks do, and neither do they make
hilarious in-game jokes... (YEEAAHH!!!) They all know that they will
receive a bonus to their salaries if they win the match, so the sport they
play is no longer about having fun, it's about feeding kids/getting
ahead/buying fancy cars/etc.
With that priority in mind, players don't hesitate as much about spoiling
the fun for others and themselves if they think that this will bring them
closer to the cash bonus at the end.
