Si/Roger/Britdisc, Yes teams should be treated equally, but many would say that the two team system doesn't do that. The ability to move players between tours and up to the last minute on a Saturday morning is a huge advantage and one that only a handful of teams in the UK have the player base to take advantage off, and one that has been widely criticized. I have consistently argued for it both as a Clapham player and a Shark for all the reasons Si and Roj have pointed out, but on balance it also has it's disadvantages. Most notably that it can result in lack of semi final and final (though not this season :-) ) experience practice for the up and coming teams (a lack of which we aptly demonstrated in Tour 3 :( ) and it is a maybe a shame that it is only in Tour 4 that we will have the chance to play the full clapham hawaii team and see how far off we are to being competitive with a top 8 team at worlds! It would be an extremely bad precedent to set to allow the two team system, but then allow roster changes when it was no longer appropriate, IMO that would be too much of an advantage. It sucks for Steve but he knew the rules when he rostered and it's not like Clapham 2 haven't pulled out of tour 4 before. Imagine the potential unbalancing of teams if all of your 7 2nd team players had all made the request that Steve made?
That being said think that Chevy coed's request is even less founded as they themselves say they had premeditated this change. It seems reasonable to me that Druids should be allowed their pickup with no penalty due to unforeseen circumstances. Perhaps in the interest of allowing the best preparation for Hawaii Chevy Coed should be allowed their pickups but at the expense of being considered unrostered for open nationals (similarly for strange blue)? I'm sure none of the teams at Tour 4 would have any more objection to Steve Balls playing on a non-Clapham team (probably Strange Blue) than they would Frankie playing with the Purple Menace, but for some reason (which I'm sure is not at all related to us being the well-loved No1 team) we seem to have been deprived such equal opportunity. The fact is that us playing as a Hawaii squad WILL benefit our team at World Clubs, that much surely is obvious? As that leaves Steve Balls (and a couple of less significant others) in the cold he would like to play on another team. And as an association concerned with the wellbeing of your individual members it ought to be something you care about as much as teams' wellbeing. Your statement that 'agreeing to their request could not benefit any teams attending the World Clubs' is therefore simplistic and inaccurate, and if your earlier assertion that 'we could have foreseen it' is reason to disallow it, then Chevron's confession that they always intended to make a change should meant you treated them the same as us. Roster rules are there to prevent teams changing over the Tour so that stable teams are encouraged in the long run, and so that the points from events depend more on differing performances than revolving door personnel. Any judgement ought to be taken on those grounds. Steve Balls' inclusion on the Strange Blue team this weekend surely will have less impact Chevvy co-ed gaining 3 players and Whey and Fusion losing key players. This is an amateur sport, what's the poor lad done to deserve being cut out? So his serious injury prevented him from making our Hawaii team; the fact our two team structure has until now accommodated him should be looked on as a positive thing, not a negative thing. All season we thought we'd be able to field 2 teams, but only recently have some players 2nd team players been injured, others have moved abroad or are travelling - in a way we could not have anticipated. We were very close to getting 2 teams (had 7 on the 2nd), but could not quite make it. On those grounds I would feel obliged to object to at least one (if not both) of the other requests unless your stance on Steve Balls were reconsidered immediately. We would like to have Frank Collins (Martie Mcfly & Mythago) play for us at Tour 4 as he has now joined our squad to go to Hawaii. The facts We started with a squad of 17 (we have proven ourselves to be to incompetent to run a larger squad) Karl Mann was badly injured at Eastbourne removing him until at least Nationals. He plays a minimum of 60% of all points. We have 5 other whinjuries / injuries which have left us with 11 / 12 players come the end of the last 3 outdoor tournies we have entered. Hawaii is going to be hot and hard so we decided to add to our numbers. Frank has trained with us (he is keen) over the last month looking to improve his game. This makes him the obvious choice. The squad would like to include up to 3 of their male players who are going to Hawaii. These players have been playing for Whey and Fusion at previous Tours. Why are we doing this? We always wanted to make this change in Tour IV if possible for the following reasons: 1. Whey and Fusion would have been substantially weakened if we had played with the full Hawaii squad in all events and this would have damaged the long term prospects for those teams 2. At the same time, Chevron coed is representing UK ultimate. It is important for us as a team, and as UK representatives, to have the best preparation possible. Every opportunity to play together will help us greatly, especially now the WUCC is just 2 weeks away. This will undoubtedly improve our squad for this weekend; it will also weaken the squads we are taking players from.
