BD,

Had some time on my hands this afternoon (gotta love being self-employed!)
so had a thorough read of the WFDF and WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency)
rules and banned substances lists.

According to the WADA, alcohol is ONLY banned in specific sports, as
requested by those federations. The relevant document is here:
http://www.wada-ama.org/docs/web/standards_harmonization/code/list_standard_2004.pdf

But here's a quote to save time:

"Alcohol (ethanol) is prohibited in-Competition only, in the following
sports. Detection will be conducted by breath analysis and/or blood.
The doping violation threshold for each Federation is reported in
parenthesis. If no threshold is indicated, the presence of any quantity of
alcohol shall constitute a doping violation.

Aeronautic (FAI) (0.2 g/L)
Archery (FITA) (0.1 g/L)
Automobile (FIA)
Billiards (WCBS)
Boules (CMSB) (0.50 g/L)
Gymnastics (FIG) (0.1 g/L)
Karate (WKF) (0.4 g/L)
Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) (0.4 g/L)
Motorcycling (FIM)
Roller Sports (FIRS) (0.02 g/L)
Skiing (FIS)
Triathlon (ITU) (0.4 g/L)
Wrestling (FILA)."

Very similar rules exist for the use of beta-blockers (often prescribed as
anti-depressants) and again the WFDF is not included. The WFDF's own
version of the rules:
http://www.wfdf.org/WFDF%202004%20Prohibited%20List.pdf
has a confusing mention of alcohol as a 'specified substance' - ie one to
watch out for on your pharmacy labels. But nowhere in the rules is
alcohol prohibited.

So rest assured that our drinking culture is safe (whether that's a good
thing or not...).
