I would argue the converse. The 3 open tour events that were held during the University term had significantly more teams entering, than both Edinburgh and the Nationals. Many students either don't have a team to practice with at home, or have played with another team previously (or even off travelling) and are therefore lost to the game after the end of university term .

If the Mixed tour was at beginning of the summer, then more university students would enter! It would also allow them to play with a mixed team at uni, then be a part of a different open club during the summer.

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned is the distortion of this summer's timetable to accommodate the world championships, and what the effect of another international tournament would be to a shrunken open season.

Subject: RE: [BD] Tournament Bids 2004/5

From my experience of the women in Phat Eds, some
female students, particularly beginners, favour
playing the mixed tour over the open tour and
condensing the mixed tour over April - June will mean
that it falls over the university exam period, making
it harder for students to go. If the tour is spread
over a larger time scale then maybe only one/two
tournaments will be missed instead of potentially all
of them.

Furthermore, I'd like to see a change in the timing
of
the tour (open, women's, and mixed) next year. The
basic idea is that the mixed tour would occur from
April through June 15. The women's and open tours
would then be run side by side from the middle of
June
through the end of August.

Mixed is a great vehicle to promote so many aspects
of
the game, and it deserves it's own season. First
and
foremost, mixed has been responsible for the
majority
of female participation and improvement (although
the
effort of the women's tour this year has been
commendable). Mixed is a great, social environment
and will draw new players towards the game for them
hopefully to continue on with the open and women's
tour later in the year.
