I had a little technical hitch while sending this first time, so I apologise if
it has gone out twice.
I have just taken delivery of a new pair of boots, ready for the winter season,
but this has lead me to ask you all a question. These boots were supposed to
come with metal tipped studs, but have actually come with full blown metal
studs and this made me think back to when I started ultimate. Back then I wore
my old rugby boots and at one tournament I was asked to leave the field due to
the metal studs they had. That's when I learnt that the rules state "403.04
Cleats: Cleats are permitted;
however, players may not use any cleats which
have any metal exposed." But why is this a rule?
Metal studs were first used in rugby and are now becoming increasingly common
in football and the simple reason for this is; safety. Metal is used on studs
to make it far harder for them to sharpen, therefore helping to prevent cuts
when a stray boot comes in contact with skin. This is why they were first used
in rugby, where a stray boot is not necessarily unintentional, but now
footballers are starting to see the benefits. It is actually getting harder to
buy boots without metal on the studs/blades and I would go as far as to say
that most games of ultimate will have a player or two with metal tipped studs.
I guess my real question is this; will I be asked to leave the field if I turn
up with metal studs on my boots? I can get plastic studs (although I haven't
yet found any 18mm studs which would help in the Winter League mud baths), but
I'm a lazy sod who would rather leave things as they are.
Cheers,
Nick

For those who are interested, I got the Asics Gel Lethal Grip 2 boots, which
are the next generation in the Gel Lethal range that were (are?) endorsed by
the UKUA. Links:
