You are right, they would get much as Furious George playing, well anyone
else in Canada. So what do the teams do in North America? They organise
their own warm up tournaments. Some of them are famous and open to
other people (e.g. Potlatch) sometimes it is just a case of Furious, Sockeye
and someone else getting together for a weekend.
Either way, the intention of 'supporting the top teams' is being met, just
without the overhead of a large (and it appears increasingly unmanageable)
tour.
In the meantime there are all sorts of other tournaments going on all
summer. These are nominally 'fun' tournaments, but the real difference
is that fun in no way excludes the concept of high quality ultimate. The final
of most any of the larger tournaments is, frankly, ridiculously high as half
of Sockeye combined with their mates from Oregon dress up in drag and
take on half of Furious combined with Prime.
Oh yeah, and anyone who wants to play ultimate can play 4 nights a week
in their local city league. Many people know the stats of 300 teams in
Ottawa, 250 in Vancouver and even 100 in Calgary.
10 years ago in the UK there weren't cheap flights to go and play in Europe,
there weren't as many teams and Ultim8 was a huge step forward. Do we
start to promote leagues more? Maybe. Will the top teams set up their
own tournaments? They probably already are.
Will there be pain as the ultimate season changes? Absolutely.
Do we need to consider other models and season structure? Quite possibly.
