I agree with Mungo, the image is my main concern. I bought the Guardian on
Saturday before realising it featured this small piece in the Weekend magazine
but on the whole (as far as "Ultimate in the media" goes) I was quite
impressed. But if the article does interest any readers who have not heard of
it before, the photo confirms the public idea that it's just a beach sport.
It's a tiny disc which he's not even looking at, so it just looks like he's
stolen the orange from an oversized jaffa cake and is making his getaway by
leaping over fences (which have been cut from the image...in Hawaii obviously,
which accounts for the hooligan wearing nothing but boardshorts!)

I was also confused by the writer's justification that "it may be less intense
than volleyball" because it's played on "a bigger pitch"!? Surely this accounts
for how much running we have to do, and since when did volleyball require much
of that?!

It would have been a whole lot more positive were it not for the
accompanying picture (in the mag, not online) of what is best described
as a beach chav playing with a kiddies toy.
But hey, at least he looked like he was having fun ;o)

Hi from Frankfurt,

What with all the fuss a couple of weeks ago about the glib passing
reference to what goes on in British parks, I'm surprised that nobody
mentioned that there was a (slightly) longer, more positive article
about Ultimate in Saturday's Life & Style section (or at least the
online version at
http://lifeandhealth.guardian.co.uk/wellbeing/story/0,,2282570,00.html).

It's basically comparing beach volleyball with "frisbee" and - although
they're talking about regular 7 on 7 Ultimate rather than the beach
variety that might have been a better comparison - it's not a bad
summing up.

Does anyone know the Lisa Buckingham who wrote it, and whether she's on
good terms with Barney Ronay who wrote the other piece...?

See you on the field!
Wayne
