Indeed - and so before this discussion goes down the wrong direction - the main issue is actually how early we close entry to the tournaments, and whether we try to improve schedules when teams drop out in the last few days before an event or just leave the affected teams with fewer games.
And this is absolutely a question for the players that are paying their entry fee to play. Prefer a schedule fixed 2-4 weeks in advance? Get tough on teams that forget to enter? And if your opponents pull out (still a regular occurrence) are you happy to have one or more games off as a result? The number of teams coming to Mixed Nationals next weekend has changed several times in the last few days. My impression is that we are somewhat better off retaining the current level of flexibility with schedules given that some teams still struggle for various reasons, and as Benji points out, you can be pretty sure you won't play before 9am on a Saturday, and that you have approx 50-50 chance of being in the group that will start between 9:00 and 9:30. But I would think we could adjust to an alternative schedule deadline if the wider community of players would prefer this (and its implications).
