Dear BD and UU,

In this short break between the Mixed and Open Tours, I thought now was a good
time to reflect on what was a very busy University season. 64 university clubs
competed at 21 tournaments for 6 titles over a 6 month period.

The Champions in their respective divisions are;

University Open Indoor Champions: Edinburough University's Ro Sham Bo
University Womens Indoor Champions: Edinburough University's Ro Sham Bo
University Mixed Indoor Champions: Warwick University's Bears
University Open Outdoor Chamions: Warwick University's Bears
University Womens Outdoor Champions: Sussex University's Mohawks
University Mixed Outdoor Champions: Warwick University's Bears

Cangratulations to all these teams for their successes this season.

But what of those who didn't win anything this year, where did they come? How
strong is your University on a national level? Whats happened to the team you
were a big part of while you were at university?

I think it would be interesting to introduce a points system, much like tour,
for the university season. I've done this using a slightly modified version of
the tour points system so coming in the top 8 at a tournament is always worth
the same but following points are weighted depending on the size of the
tournament. Coming 11th at a 24 team tournament is worth more than a 12 team
tournament. This rewards teams finishing lower down in larger regions.
Regionals are also worth half the points of a national competition.

The main reason behind this unofficial league is to highlight the difference
between University and most Tour Clubs. We train as large mixed squads all year
long so success in any division is representative of the club as a whole not
just the players in the team. I think the performance of your club over the
whole season should be rewarded. This doesn't take away from the Champions in
each division, it just highlights those teams that compete well but just never
reach that top spot.

However, it does have its flaws. Due to the tournament distribution, some teams
couldn't make certain tournaments due to exams or other commitments so the
results aren't categorical. I would like to think if such a points system were
to be introduced in the future, the tournament calendar could easily be changed
to accommodate all exams, every region would hold a regionals for all divisions
and teams would also be encouraged to compete in all divisions.

So, without further ado, below are the league results for the 08/09 Season;
