BD The first two days weren't full of too many surprises. The problem with reporting is that I only ever see half of the teams. The 1-4 pitches are near HQ while the 5-8 pitches are in a different place and teams do not cross over midday. Today U20 was on 1-4 all day. U20 boys GB 1 look hot. The pull play worked a treat against the Swedes and GB finished them off something like 13-7 today. Statto gave them 'the talk' before the game about the history of this match up and it showed in the game. Previously however, Finland had beaten the Swedes as well in sudden death 13-12 or 12-11. Either way it was close. When GB met Finland at the end of the afternoon all eyes were watching. With Germany having already showed it's cards and that in spite of the fantastic hair styles there weren't the Germany of 2007, GB was now looking good and Finland had taken Germany's place as the next real threat. GB started slow against Finland going down 3 points early and spent the rest of the game clawing this back until 11-11 with GB receiving. It was unfortunate drops and rushed choices that let them down and they lost 13-11. It'll give them a tougher journey back to the final but will likely mean a rematch for the gold. U17 boys Yesterday GB looking surprisingly good. The real troublemaker was the U17 Germans. Not much depth but the stars of that team could have played on the U20s and made them more competitive. GB I think gave them the tightest score so far. The 2nds in both areas are playing well and not losing games as much as you'd think. Quite a few players on the 2nds could have fit in on the 1sts but obviously nobody on the 1sts looked like 2nds so I imagine the person who made the tough choices struggled with the decision.
U20 Girls and U17 Yesterday we saw some of this but today nothing at all. I saw a good deal of crutches though and heard about many hospital visit and the resulting shortage of coaching staff because of the need to accompany injured players. Aussie is probably better positioned to report on them as Linz has been helping out. The few games we saw yesterday were quite good. The memorable one was U17 beating Sweden. All for now. It's 3am here and I'm just back from being taken out for my birthday to a german(austrian) schlager party. It was hell on earth and fantastic all at once. I felt like being part of a Louis Theroux weird weekend. They did play Falco's Vienna Calling and we tore up the dance floor. That has to be one of those 'to-do before you die' moments while in Vienna.
