Just got back from BB King's. After a long wait the show began at 8:30 PM.
Fab Faux played for a half hour. They did the usual Beatles but also did
"Catch Us If You Can". I was surprised that Jimmy V played the harp
rather than inviting Paul Schaeffer the MC to do it. I was also surprised
that FF were not the house band. After a short break the house band
(Paul, Anton and others) were joined for a series of 3 song sets by
Billy J. and then Denny Laine.Each did one DC5 song. Billy: Come Home
and Denny: Anyway You Want It. I was extremely happy to hear Denny
reprise "I Go Crazy" from the first Moodies album. I always loved that
song done by them.
The highlight of the night was the 37 year reunion of Peter and Gordon.
They did "I Go To Pieces", "Lady Godiva", "True Love Ways", a countrified
version of DC5's Because (I blame Paul), "World Without Love" and an
encore of "Woman". Everyone got crazy when Peter put on his original
glasses. A short break was followed by a short film of Mike Smith at home
recuperating and thanking everyone for their efforts. It was very moving.
The Zombies had a problem in Toronto airport. Dave Letterman lent
the use of a charter airplane to get them to Teterboro,NJ. They did only
a short 5 song set including their 3 big hits,Argent's "Hold Your Head Up"
and DC5's "Can't You See That She's Mine". Paul S. called everyone out
on stage including Donald Fagen and Max Weiberg for a finale of Bits and
Pieces.
I paid $76 to stand for 7 hours. I just kept telling myself it was for Mike.
