Hm, that's certainly a possibility.  I remember it coming across as  
mildly bothersome many years ago as well, but I supposed I've just  
gotten completely used to it over the years.  It helps that there's  
no perl in BRL-CAD.

In addition to the code changes to support the new extension  
convension, it would involve changing the names of about 20 utilities  
that process plot files.  From a quick search, those are:

crew:/usr/brlcad/bin sean$ ls *pl pl[^y]*
asc-pl          pl-asc          pl-hpgl         pl-ps            
plcolor         plline2         txyz-pl
pixhist3d-pl    pl-dm           pl-pl           pl-sgi           
pldebug         plrot           xyz-pl
pl-X            pl-fb           pl-pl           pl-tek           
plgetframe      plstat

Several of those would require mods as well as a few other tools  
(can't forget mged), and those in particular would need to be renamed  
to match a new suffix convention.  If you're willing to take all that  
on (it should be all or nothing for consistency), I don't see a  
strong reason to oppose it myself.
