Is it because you were maybe using a release or optimized build?

Newer versions of gcc are smart enough to notice when variables get set to some value but the value itself is not used.  That was a compile with gcc 4.6.2 20111027, unoptimized debug build on a power7 linux box.

2. I wasn't trying to be stubborn about putting the field comments
back in--I might need them later when I try to clean up that area a
little in the future.
