Okay, through skill, cunning, and subterfuge (plus help from an Ubunu 10.04 LTS alternate CD with a rescue setting, program zerofree, and VB's low-level program "vboxmanage modifyhd") I was able to squeeze the existing VM from almost 6 Gb down to 1.34 Gb! Now I will go back and add a few things, including updating the brlcad/trunk, and re-squeeze to see where we are.
