Welcome Siddharth!  Thanks for the introduction and your interest in BRL-CAD.  
I think we have at least a few potential projects that fit your interests.  ;)

I think everything you say there is quite true.  Code refactoring is a great 
way to learn about an existing body of code.  Probably one of the best ways if 
real effort and care is put in to improving code quality through abstractions 
and restructuring.

That said, given just how many students have expressed an interest in 
refactoring this year, I would recommend applying for a second project idea too 
(one refactoring, one not).  What other projects pique your interest?  It's 
fine if you're only interested in code reduction, but be sure to prepare a 
solid source code patch to go with your proposal.  Something that demonstrates 
your abilities and (hopefully) can impress upon us a passionate interest in 
improving BRL-CAD.
