I checked mged (under xfce) built with non-ogl support.  Using the
mged GUI (mged commands in its terminal window) I built a couple of
regions and successfully raytraced them and got a good framebuffer
display of the objects.  I was able to use the GUI editor for
attributes, combinations, and primitives.
