You should take a look at what Cezar did for a related GCI task:

I believe he made a few adjustments and improvements in addition to updating the checkout.  Perhaps he can speak about them.

One thing to maybe consider is a STABLE checkout instead of trunk, but I haven't thought through all of the merits and downsides yet.
