So it looks like the problem was inheriting from QWidget instead of QWindow.  
That came to mind when I'd first glanced at the code, but I'd dismissed it 
because their API docs made it sound like it should've worked.

Meh.  I don't consider that a drawback.  Since this is brand new foundation 
going forward, it's good to use/require the very latest possible so that we 
don't introduce new capability that instantly has an unpaid maintenance cost 
once released.
