Hello All!
Hopefully you are all mostly recovered from GCI… I know I’ve not yet recovered
and that is a primary cause for this delayed announcement, but I’ve decided to
proceed with a GSoC 2015 application. This is entirely to support the
interests of our newly budding association of CAx projects.
If you’re interested in mentoring, please register on Melange and send me back
an e-mail in private with your username.
If we are accepted — and that is a BIG if this year as we are overdue a veteran
rejection — it is my intention to accept very few students for BRL-CAD.
Exactly how many will depend entirely on your willingness to mentor and only
exceptional students that communicate very well and demonstrate solid code
competency through patch submissions will even be considered. That said, this
leaves much room for LibreCAD, OpenSCAD, and STEPcode to take on more activity
and for us to direct talent towards them, if they’re willing.
So that also means … update the project ideas page! The URL that will go into
the application is http://brlcad.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/Project_Ideas
so keep in mind that the OSPO reviewers will spend all of 1 minute at best
giving it a quick review. I suggest hyperlinking individual topics like
OpenSCAD did last year, but feel free to restructure it or make it easier to
navigate if someone has the time and inclination to work on it.
For the topics, remember as a general rule of thumb to write detailed
descriptions that scope efforts that you think will roughly take one solid
month of effort. And as always, I encourage us all to think about projects
that encourage cross-code collaboration, code sharing, and integration.
Besides creating a Melange account, updating the project ideas page is really
the only action that needs to be taken right now.
One more thing... This is likely the last year I will be submitting an
application for BRL-CAD. I’m working (with several of you) this year — and
have already started — to establish a formal umbrella organization to handle
and support collaborative initiatives like this in the future. So while not
the end of our participation by any means, we will not be the center of
attention. I believe this is necessary for us to continue our pattern of
growth sustainably and to create new opportunities.
