This is a known issue with the 7.12 release on Mac OS X 10.6 where it  
won't start up properly.  The problem was fixed in a later release of  
BRL-CAD but a Mac binary has yet to be uploaded.  You'll either have  
to wait for us to upload one (which should be soon, but  
unpredictable) or compile from a source distribution.

Compilation on Mac is pretty simple to perform.  If you're  
interested, there is a README and INSTALL file in the source  
distribution that will walk you through the process and available  
options.  There is a doc/README.MacOSX file that gives additional  
details specific to Mac.
