David, This is a known issue with the 7.12 release on Mac OS X 10.6 where it won't start up properly. The problem was fixed in a later release of BRL-CAD but a Mac binary has yet to be uploaded. You'll either have to wait for us to upload one (which should be soon, but unpredictable) or compile from a source distribution.
Compilation on Mac is pretty simple to perform. If you're interested, there is a README and INSTALL file in the source distribution that will walk you through the process and available options. There is a doc/README.MacOSX file that gives additional details specific to Mac. Cheers!
