After some recent discussions about language translations of BRL-CAD documentation, I just crunched some quick numbers on the BRL-CAD documentation checked into our repository and was pretty surprised by what I found, so I thought I'd share the results.
Counting everything (manual pages, old html email discussions, old html docs, text docs, troff docs, and new docbook docs), there are approximately 1M words of documentation checked into the repository. If you take out the old html email discussions, an encoded copy of the old mged manual, and a few other duplicates, it drops to about 600k words of documentation. If you consider some substantial portion of the manual pages, html, and xml files are tags and markup, the actual word count is known to be even lower. Extrapolating the page length of the MGED tutorial series, volumes II and III, and cross-referencing to their respective xml sizes gives approximately 250 words per page including images and markup. Considering the older docs have few images and the newer docs have lots of images, we can reasonably expect an average range of about 200 to 300 words per page. This results in approximately 2000 to 3000 pages of single-sided printed documentation. That's a lot of documentation. Cheers! Sean p.s. Moreover, about 25% of BRL-CAD's capabilities are not documented at all (except as source code). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Return on Information: Google Enterprise Search pays you back Get the facts. http://p.sf.net/sfu/google-dev2dev _______________________________________________ BRL-CAD Users mailing list [email protected] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/brlcad-users
