location, however, is /var/lib/brltty/brltty.prefs.

That's the wrong syntax. I showed it that way because that's how it appears
within the menu. The syntax for the .prefs file is:
show-attributes yes
blinking-attributes yes
attributes-visible-time 20
attributes-invisible-time 60
