Hey all,
thank you for all your thoughts on that. It was already very interesting
and helpful.
Mario, maybe you're right and Applevis would have been a better place to
discuss that, compared to this list. The reason why I chose to right
here was because on one hand, here are persons using and relying on
Braille display, and also some of you who use the terminal. But thank
you for the idea, I'll also search on Applevis.
Best regards, Julian

To the best of my knowledge, it is still possible to compile and run
BRLTTY under MacOS. I haven’t tried it, however.
VoiceOver for MacOS supports a variety of braille displays. Just
connect a supported display, start VoiceOver, and you should have
basic braille access. You can also assign commands to controls on the
braille display via VoiceOver configuration.
VoiceOver for Mac seems to be polarizing: some people like it, whereas
others – especially former Windows users – complain ad nauseum. I’m
more in the former category, while fully acknowledging bugs and
limitations. Every operating system has those, especially in
connection with accessibility. Accessibility-related bugs aside, MacOS
is an excellent operating system. The only way to find out how well it
fits your use cases, unfortunately, is to spend some time with it, and
put aside the Windows knowledge while learning a quite different
screen reader. Essentially, VoiceOver for Mac relies extensively on
object-level navigation using screen reader commands, and only
secondarily on keyboard navigation commands included in the system and
applications. All of the usual UNIX commands and utilities are
available, but they follow BSD syntax. I would recommend installing
Homebrew, which provides an easy means of installing both MacOS
applications and free software/open-source packages (but not BRLTTY).
I currently have Linux, MacOS, Windows and iOS; I’ve worked with
Android and ChromeOS to a much lesser extent, so I have used most of
the currently popular operating systems.

*Subject: *[BRLTTY] Slightly OT: Braille support on MacOS
Hi all, sorry for the slightly off-topic quiestion, but I believe that
here may be some Braille-familiar users knowing a bit more about MacOS
than I. Currently, I use Windows primarily, and whenever I have the
option to work in the CLI I use Linux. Speech is nice to have, but I
rely primarily on Braille, and in the CLI I'm completely without
speech. Now since I most likely need a new laptop, I thought of
getting a Macbook, since I'm impressed of the very good quality of the
speakers, the power of the M2, and if I want to use the Logic DAW then
I actually don't have another choice. But how is the Brialle support?
Everyone I asked just told me that it's possible to connect a Braille
display, but they work primarily with speech. Learning new shortcuts
and apps would be fully OK for me, getting speech-dependent wouldn't.
So, do you guys have any experiences to share? I'd be happy hearing
from you. All the best, Julian
