There should be a brltty.log file, does it show any errors? You can
raise the logging level in the 'brltty.conf'.

Subject: [BRLTTY] ALVA controls quit working

Hello helpful guys on BRLTTY.

I may have asked this already; but since I haven't seen an answer, I
must have been dreaming. Here it is; maybe again:

I'm using an HP computer with windows 10 Pro 64,, NVDA current release,
BRLTTY 6.4, and an alva 80-cell display, ABT80 via serial port. Been
using it for something over a year now. All of a sudden, the controls
stopped working. That means the routing buttons and all the PushBars on
the front. It's connected via a real serial port, no adaptor. How can
I find out what happened and fix it? Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Howard
