Why are you so sure that it's a bug in the driver rather than a problem with 
the device?

Capture a -ldebug,usb log when you can.

This has now been fixed. A new preference - Speak Empty Line - has been added 
which defaults to Yes. Note that it now says "blank" rather than "space".
