I investigated and AIUI Mate has not yet been ported to Wayland, which
would mean also changing desktop from Mate to GNOME.
MATE is starting to get ported to Wayland, but it's still early and
rough. But I guess testing would be most welcome :)
However, the DBus API Orca uses for keybindings under Wayland is not
implemented in MATE yet, so that might be tough -- I didn't test that yet.
I always thought Mate ismore accessible than GNOME. Am I wrong about
this or is it something that was true in the past but has changed since?
It definitely was. Nowadays, GNOME did a great job at improving things,
and it's probably worth reconsidering GNOME 48+ if you're happy to
change some habits. Also, under Wayland GNOME is probably the best
accessible option, as again the newer APIs Orca depend on were designed
and implemented on GNOME and MATE didn't catch up on that yet.
I also find that it works quite well with Orca now, so there isn't really a
strong reason to switch back to X.
Except if Mate is more accessible, as I said above.
