I investigated and AIUI Mate has not yet been ported to Wayland, which
would mean also changing desktop from Mate to GNOME.
I always thought Mate ismore accessible than GNOME. Am I wrong about
this or is it something that was true in the past but has changed since?
I haven't used Mate recently, so I can't comment. GNOME is now more
accessible with Orca than it used to be. I would describe it as a
gradual improvement with bug fixes.
Based on podcast interviews that I've heard, the principal developer of
Mate appears to have moved on to other projects. I don't know how much
maintenance or further development it will receive. If I remember
correctly, he regards it as an essentially finished project, suggesting
no further major changes are expected. This is best I can remember from
podcasts I heard at least a year or two ago.
The Cosmic desktop environment is also worth monitoring. Although it is
still only available in an alpha release, support for Orca has already
been worked on.
I'm currently running GNOME 48, but of course I am using applications
most of the time and I don't interact frequently with, for example,
menus in the desktop environment itself.
