Okay, it looks like there's some kind of hardware problem. I did:
dmesg | grep ttyS
and get a whole bunch of lines that look something like this:
[ 9886.996672] ttyS0: LSR safety check engaged!
People are telling me I have to get into the bios and do something with IRQ fiddling. Is there an alternative? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: "Informal discussion between users and developers of BRLTTY." <[email protected]>

Well, it certainly looks like it. Next, try googling for netmos on the
web, and see what you can find.

Okay, I did this command
lspci -v
and got this:
02:09.0 Serial controller: NetMos Technology PCI 9835 Multi-I/O Controller
(rev
01) (prog-if 02 [16550])
Subsystem: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic Device 0001
Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 17
I/O ports at d010 [size=8]
I/O ports at d018 [size=8]
I/O ports at d020 [size=8]
I/O ports at d028 [size=8]
I/O ports at d030 [size=8]
I/O ports at d000 [size=16]
Kernel driver in use: serial
That looks like the ports should be working, right? Is it normal to have
that many IO ports?

Hi Rob. What make is your serial card? Some cards come with special
drivers that need to be loaded before you can use the card. It's also
possible that there is a jumper that can be set on the card to map the
card as ttys0 and 1, or 2 and 3. The reason I mention the
special drivers is that I have a Perle Systems serial card in my
desktop box. With the card, there was a drivers disk containing drivers
for windows, Mac Os, and Linux. The Linux drivers were open source, and
had to be compiled and installed, before the card would function.

It's possible that the card manufactorer has a web site where the
drivers can be downloaded, if they didn't ship a cd with the card. I
hope these suggestions help.
