I am glad that you were able to reproduce the problem. It might be that the
sleep is a problem there, but another user has also this problem and I think he
doesn't use a sleep in between.
However , I could imagine that I already tried to read the screen using Shift+Up
/ Shift+Down. It also explains why it happens with the shift key and seldom with
the control key.

I was sure that  I was able to release the held shift key key with a sequence,
but never managed to remember which key combination it was. Thanks for finding
it out :-).
