Actually I think your alternative proposal is more interesting,
because entering all this would be difficult for users, especially
those who don't know fine the qwerty keyboard. So a solution to make
easier the user input seems more suitable, if you can.
What if we consume parameters after the driver but before the device, if they
contain an equal sign, as braille driver parameters? So, for example:
brltty=eu,protocol=clio,serial:ttyS0,fr
That looks unambiguous and convenient, indeed.
