The strace actually looks good. Since the pipe from sgmlpre to nsgmls isn't 
being set to nonblocking at either end, I'm wondering if sgmlpre isn't flushing 
its standard output before exiting. The only way to be sure is if you could 
redo the strace with -s 8192 in order to capture all of the data.
