Evidently (from Steffen's posting today) there are also requests to
make the linkname namespace match the hostname namespace :-) If we
buy that request, we may have to re-examine the roots of this debate.

true. I have no objections to "/" myself, except for the ipfilter
issue. Assuming "-" is not available, that leaves us with some odd/ugly
choices like "+" and "%".  Another alternative is 
<interface name>:<label> where <label> MUST be one of the following:
  - start with an alphabet, followed by alphanumerics, 
or,
  - be a numeric ipv4/ipv6 address
