That sounds pretty low! But not totally impossible. If you had lots of
fermentable sugars in your wort, they added to the gravity. Now the
yeast has eaten them away, so the wort has got lighter. But the yeast
has also produced alcohol, which makes the solution even lighter!
You would do well to calibrate your hydrometer. Just measure the gravity
of plain water under the same conditions, and see if you need to apply a
correction to get it to 1000...

It might - your beer may well have settled into different layers, with
more of the alcohol floating on the surface, and more of the heavier
stuff falling to the bottom.

Fair enough, although the serious risk is from starting to cool to the
time when the yeast has established itself. By now it should be
relatively safe to take another sample.
How much was your OG, and what FG did you expect? Did the sampe taste
promising?
As far as I can see, your brew may be on the dry side, but
it will be beer anyway
