I have written ARRL exams. Exam day is pretty much what you would expect in a proctored exam. Multiple examiners in the room, test takers facing the same direction as each other and spaced appropriately apart. No one is allowed to speak to each other or use books during the exam.
The only issue with exam day has been the registration time. It can take quite a long time to get everyone identified, scheduled and seated for the correct exam. One interesting side note, on ARRL exams: The fee is for as many exams as you can pass in one sitting. ie. In the U.S. we have (basically) three levels of Amateur radio operator. If you pay your money (~$12) and are able to pass the level 1 exam, they will let you try the level 2 exam. Pass that and you get to try the level 3 exam. All for the same $12.
