It's a lot cheaper, and it's a lot easier to decide wether an answer is right or wrong. With open questions there will always be arguments about an answer being right or wrong. Multiple choice makes that matter a lot more easier. Besides, you can make multiple choice questions that need thorough understanding of the subject matter. You do not have to give answers that are ridiculous, there could be six farely reasonable answers, only one being right.
