Hi Robin,
thanks for your feedback. I was in fact considering a digital release
but decided
against it for 2 reasons:
1. I would expect that a reader would first glance over the entire book
to memorize
its content and come back later to specific questions. This was how
I read Knuth's
"The art of Computer Programming" which is IMHO still the best books
of that kind.
A digital format would not support that kind of working. Also, the
digital form of my
first book ("Ein paralleler APL Rechner, 1992"), stored on a 3.5"
floppy disk
got lost in one of my 18 or so moves while my paper copy still exists.
2. If you search for "Sauermann Thelen" on the internet then you will
find an older
book of Melanie Thelen and myself which you can buy as printed
version. None of
those offering the book has ever asked Melanie or me for permission
to sell
printed copies (the original was published only digitally).
As to the pricing: on demand printing is more expensive than regular
printing. Only
a fairly small fraction of the sales price (far less than 50%) comes
back to the author.
Given the rather small anticipated audience for the book I will not even
recover my
initial expenses. And, comparing the sales price with Knuth's books (not
claiming that
the content of my book is even close to Knuth's - but at least its page
count and paper
weight is) you may find the sales price reasonable.
And finally: before you buy something that you don't need - the book is more
about C++ than about APL. The APL-related aspects of GNU APL are available
free of charge and shipped with the GNU APL project.
Best Regards,
Jürgen

Congratulations, Jürgen!
I discovered your book even before you announced it. I was looking
for *something* about APL and there it was.
Books on Demand is quite expensive, though. Are you planning
a digital release as well?
Best regards,
Robin
