It is a consequence of the imperfection of error message
parsing/tracking.  This is worse for C-` than for preview-latex (which
should be unified at some point of time), but the principal problem
remains.

Try configuring the -file-line-error type messages in your texmf.cnf.
This should lead to better behavior.
