(My apologies for the delay in replying - it took some time before I could experiment with other versions of emacs.)
The shrinking behavior does not occur when I run emacs 22.2.1. However, it does occur with the following newer snapshot: GNU Emacs 23.0.94.1 (i486-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.16.1) of 2009-06-18 on samarium, modified by Debian. I'd prefer using the development snapshot due to the truetype font support it offers. Its strange that the shrinking behavior does not occur in ordinary text mode, nor in Ruby development mode in the development snapshot. I'd appreciate any thoughts that you may have.
