Okay, so the problem is not related to a customization. Then perhaps it's related to the graphical environment. Scouring the Emacs mailing lists I found the following message on emacs-devel: <URL:http://mid.gmane.org/877ikdzvxz.fsf_-_%40escher.local.home> So if you are using the gtk-qt engine this might explain why you are seeing the frame shrinkage and I don't.
