Looking into this a bit more I noticed the rather specific magic that happens
for the [experimental] CONFIG_RELOCATABLE option, and the fact that I am
compiling the kernel with that option. Specificaly selecting a non-relocatable
kernel results in what seems like a perfectly bootable kernel.

Summary: I am currently running a Linux system (Fedora 8-based) using a 2.6.24
kernel that was built on a system (Debian-based) using binutils with gold as
linker.

Conclusion: It seems like the relocatable kernel handling stuff is the culprit
in ending up with a non-booting kernel.
