For the record, I think the v5 CUs in a.out simply come from the inclusion of
crt1.o (libc startup files) during the link. Oh well.
(It would have been strange if the gcc driver *didn't* turn -gdwarf-4 into an
implied -Wa,--gdwarf-4. So I checked the situation with gcc -v.)
