There are two reasons for my hesitation: 1. It appears that there is no specification for how .gnu.warning.SYM sections should be handled. 2. The warning is generated very early on in the linker's code, at the place where symbols are added to the internal symbol tables, so moving the warning generation to after garbage collection will be non-trivial. So I am tempted to resolve this issue by documenting the current behaviour as the expected behaviour. But I agree that the behaviour is non-intuitive and can cause user confusion.
