This has been my official "now I feel like an idiot" moment for the day: I *know* the Solaris shells are often rather old and buggy, I just didn't think of it. I had to do a double-bootstrap (the first to get out from under the system /usr/bin/ld and /usr/ccs/bin/as; the second to get out from under an ld and as with an absolute path). The GCC build has finished happily, so I can test both with and without GNU ld-capable linkers on sol11.4.
