You're right; if Texinfo is the GNU projet's preferred documentation format, then the GNU developers themselves should be directing their energies towards improving the Info documentation. However, if someone offers a patch which improves the manual pages, it seems logical to welcome such improvements, especially since GNU developers less likely to work on them. Very few of the coreutils manpages have examples. This is unfortunate, since coreutils contains tools which are heavily used by beginners as well as expert users. I, for one, welcome improvements to the manpages.
