It's all a big compromise, and tunable.
Suggestions for improvement are always welcome.

However, I'd like to keep it relatively simple and
don't want to spend too much time trying to avoid theoretical
test failures in a category of test that isn't even run by default.

It'd be nice to make it immune to a delay induced by a
suspended "make check", too.
