I've reproduced this in cvs-1.10.7 and variants of cvs-1.10.8. This bug is more an annoyance than a showstopper. To reproduce it, do the following: export CVSROOT=hostname:/repo0 cvs co module export CVSROOT=hostname:/repo1 cvs release -d module will try to release module twice giving the following output: cvs release: no such directory: module since the module would've been removed by the second pass.
