Ddrescue have access to the drives trough the kernel. So you are right; if the kernel does not fully recognize a drive, ddrescue can't read data from it.

If you can't make linux to recognize the drive, perhaps you could try to freeze it as David Burton suggests in the Freshmeat page for ddrescue.
