Dear all, there's a quite user-friendly explanation on how to find out the serial number of a drive (which helps to confirm that a certain device is a certain hard disk) by the German hosting company Hetzner:

The output of smartctl is explained nicely as well further below in the guide. While the guide does not literally address the "am I specifying the correct drive to ddrescue"-question it could be a good place to point less experienced users to.
