Mac users don't have to have twice the space, because you can use the
rescued image with a shadow file.
Best of both worlds: your rescue file will remain intact (but to be sure,
lock it), and you can play with a writable disk image, because all
modifications will go into the shadow file:

Normal usage:
hdiutil attach /MacHD.dmg -shadow /MacHD.dmg.shadow

Super-safe usage, use Disk Utility to mount:
hdiutil attach -readonly -noverify -nomount /MacHD.dmg -shadow
/MacHD.dmg.shadow
