Hello Martin,

Is this a bug in ddrescue or some kind of fallback behaviour when the device size cannot be determined?

This is the normal behaviour when the size of the input device can't be determined and the domain has not been limited with, for example, the --size option.

The manual already gives some hints:
http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/manual/ddrescue_manual.html#Algorithm

"1) Optionally read a logfile describing the status of a multi-part or previously interrupted rescue. If no logfile is specified or is empty or does not exist, mark all the rescue domain as non-tried."

But I'm sure it could be more explicit. Thanks for the hint.

Best regards,
Antonio.
